Zinc, boost immunity with Tea & Chai

Zinc is a powerful antioxidant that is a crucial component in protecting the body from pathogens and viruses.  In New Zealand, we lack zinc in our soils. Health implications from this can be seen in the medical condition of the New Zealand population.  With high eczema and asthma rates, the highest bowel cancer for women in the Western World and then the leading cause of fetal death in New Zealand is lack of growth, linked to a lack of zinc.

Zinc is required for chemical reactions in the body called Methalayation.  Methylation is where a molecule called a ‘methyl group’ is added to another substance such as DNA or a protein. Hence, the molecule receiving the methyl group can function, this allowing over 3000 enzyme reactions to occur in the body.

It is vital for both physical and mental aspects in the body,  from the nervous system, cardiovascular to immune system activity.

So at this time, it is essential to boost your zinc levels through supplements such as Solgar range or Biotrace (many other brands are synthetic and will pass straight through without absorption).  Or you can drink Rooibos Red Bush Tea which has zinc naturally in it.   The yellow and red teas have been shown to have good levels of zinc.  Rooibos is one of the traditional teas of Africa.

Other foods in New Zealand high in zinc are fish and shellfish. Nuts, and spices that are grown overseas. I get mine from www.roarfood.co.nz  Legumes and seeds that have grown overseas plus brown rice. Cocoa has good levels of zinc too.

In New Zealand, we give the animals zinc due to the lack of zinc in the soils, which are given to prevent facial eczema.  Cows get facial eczema each spring if they don’t have zinc, interesting!, I don’t know how much zinc is actually in the meat, so sourcing overseas meat might be a thought.

Some signs of zinc deficiency are

  • Poor neurological function, Poor memory, Brain fog
  • Weak immune system, Frequent colds
  • White marks on the nails
  • Allergies to Foods & Environment
  • Diarrhea
  • Leaky gut
  • Hair loss. Gray hair
  • Bruises & Acne
  • Bad breath & Body odor (if you lack in zinc you stink)
  • Malabsorption
  • Inadequate taste and smell
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pica (cravings to eat non-food items)
  • Eating disorders, including picky eating
  • Slow wound healing
  • Cold hands & Feet
  • Mouth cracks, Canker sores. Mouth sensitivity

Rooibos contains superoxide dismutase, an enzyme known to help with anti-aging, as it helps produce healthy skin cells.  In addition, Rooibos is high in vitamin C, which is another powerful antioxidant.
